Fatty Bao - Asian Gastro bar!

Its my wife's birthday and I cannot "stay calm"!

This is stretching the British 'stay calm' nonsense too far but all the same - it meant a special celebration with a nice dinner.

She loves asian food and 'Fatty Bao' had been on our radar for sometime. So, we headed out for a 7:30pm reservation. Requested for a table on the terrace and got one close to the bar. Its nice and pleasant but there are a couple of places on the terrace out in the open which would be wonderful if the night is a clear one.

We ordered a chicken teriyaki bao and the pork belly.

Pork belly is something I have been longing to try and trust me it did not disappoint. The pieces are slow braised and then flash seared to give a crisp outer covering.

The Bao was amazing also. Juicy and succulent chunks of chicken with some veggies in a soft bao.

For the main course we tried the mushroom ramen. It was basically a variety of mushrooms in a very flavorful broth with ramen(noodles). The broth as is claimed had been slow cooked for hours to give that deep flavor and was very hearty and comforting.

We washed the food with some fresh orange juice and a sparking lime.

I loved the food and the general ambiance.

The meal with taxes cost ~1700/-

There is valet parking available and booking a table would be a good idea since it tends to get pretty crowded.

Cafe Thulp - Now in Indiranagar!

Before I had known about the fame of this place, I had accidentally walked into it in its original location in a small bylane in Koramangala 1st block back in 2011. I remember thoroughly enjoying the hamburger that I had.

Had not been able to visit it ever since. Until they opened up a branch in Indiranagar at 80ft road and 6th Main. Headed for dinner tonight.

The place seemed pretty busy but we had a choice of three tables and we chose a corner one. The decor is quirky with action comics images on the walls and so is the menu card - all dishes have interesting names and descriptions.

I decided on the hamburger with cheese and Bacon. It comes with french fires, coleslaw and a pickled chilli.
The burger was great - nice and juicy patty, crisp bacon and crunchy veggies.

Nikita ordered an Italian grilled subway - mushrooms, mozzarella and sun-dried tomatoes and basil inside a brown bread. It was very good too - grilled to perfection - flavors complimenting each other with the nice side of roasted potatoes and coleslaw.

We also had a drink of the homemade lemonade which was refreshing.

Only complaint about the place was the seating. The sofas are too low for the tables to be able to eat comfortably and the tables are too wide across to have a decent discussion without having to speak loudly.

There is no added tax or charge whatsoever. You pay what is in the menu.
Our meal came up to 550/- which is pretty decent for the quantity and quality of food served.

That's one more place added to our list of favorites and we hope to visit it often to try out all the different dishes it has to offer. They have pizzas, pastas, salads and a good collection of entrees apart from their burger offerings. They also serve beer!!

MTR - Mavalli Tiffin Room!

Well let me face it - this place is an all vegetarian South Indian affair, but I love it!
Why - They have loads of Ghee in all dishes and their ingredients are of the high quality and service is good.

They have a short menu but they know their dishes well and stick to the tried and tested ones.

The original place is near Lalbagh and I have never been to that place because of the long wait times. But when they opened a place at Indiranagar, we have started visiting that place quite a few times.

My favorite is the Masala Dosa which they serve with a tiny bowl of Ghee, so you can slather it over your crisp dosa which is already covered with ghee from the roasting. Well no one is complaining!

Last visit we had the full meals which is an interesting experience and at 220/- is decently priced for all the food that you get.

You start off with some grape juice and then the Thali arrives which basically has unlimited mini-masala-dosas and puris along with the different types of veggies and chutneys.
Then comes the Dahi vada, followed by Bisi-bele bath.
Next is rice-sambar followed by rice-rasam and curd rice.

Oh there are also two types of sweets - payasam and a milk peda.

To top it all off finally, is a sweet-gulkand paan!

It is a nice place to have a wholesome, pleasing and authentic south indian dinner.

Cafe Pascucci

Wifey wanted to have a light dinner of some salad and sandwich. Among the places we found on Zomato, Cafe Pascucci looked inviting from the menu and we had anyways always meant to visit it.

It is a small place on 6th Main Indiranagar. The interiors are nicely done and they have free wi-fi which the waiter helps in connecting.

We ordered a Mediterranean grilled vegetable sandwich which was a nice and light sandwich. Served with a little coleslaw and an interesting sauce in which to dip your sandwich.

Next was an antipasti of arctichoke bulb, olives, cherry tomato, mozarella cheese with pesto served with a couple of slices of garlic bread. There was also a small lettuce salad with a vinegar dressing.

Enjoyed the dinner and the bill amounted to a decent 400/-.

Plan to visit it next time to check out the other offerings this place has - especially the wood-fired pizzas and the iced coffees.

Suryawanshi - with a 'W'!

Sunday - 6th July- we headed out for lunch to this new place we had heard a lot about - "Suryawanshi"! It deals in Maharashtrian - kolhapuri and Malwani cuisine. It is next to the EPIP zone bus stop in whitefield. The place is decently decorated and definitely not like the 'Savaji' kahanvalis in north Karnataka.

The regular group again was there - Pavan and family and wifey. The place deals in Thalis and also a-la-carte dishes. We opted for some small starters - Sabudana vada and Misal-Pav, before choosing thalis.

The Misal pav was good and spicy ->
The Sabu-dana vadas were also pretty good - crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.

We ordered a mutton fry thali for me and Veg thalis for the rest.

My thali was good - the chappatis were soft and the two mutton dishes - mutton curry and kolhapuri mutton fry were good too. But by god! were they spicy .. I still am suffering from that burning sensation. Apart from the dry red chillies - I could not get any other flavor and it was kind of disappointing.

The Veg thali also was good but nothing much to praise about - except of course the so
l-kadi! Yeah - the pink liquid is not strawberry milkshake - its a sour and lightly spicy drink.

Overall the meal for 4 cost us 1100/-. Note that there is a 14.5% VAT.

Its a good place if you can bear the spice and are a die-hard Marathi food fan.
As for us, it was OK-OK and we may not go back in a hurry.

Shebestan - An all arabian affair!

After reading some reviews about the not-so-widely publicized 5-course set lunch at Shebestan, we decided to try it out today. Being a Sunday, decided to check out if there are any tables available before we booked the coupons from Groupon. Luckily, there was and we landed up there at 1pm for what was to be a nice 2-hour lazy lunch - every bit of it enjoyable.

The decor is very good - classy without being too clunky or too loud. It would look even better in the evening with all the lamps on. We were seated in a glass top area which was like sitting out yet in the comfort of A/C.

The food is a 5 course set menu - soup, starters, kebabs, Main course and dessert.
Once we settled in and ordered for a drink, the food started coming in.

First was a onion - chickpea soup. It was nice and light and very flavorful. I like the style of the serving bowl!

Next up was this whole combination of dishes for starters -

Hummus - cooked chick pea and sesame paste in olive oil

Tabbouleh - parsley, mint and tomato salad
Potatoes cooked with oregano and onion

Falafels

Sliced Fish in bell peppers, onion and mint base

A beautiful walnut, cashew & pomegranate mash

and of course

Warm freshly baked Pita bread !!

We had a great time rolling these in and trying various small wraps. Each had a very wonderful flavour that complemented each other without any one being too overpowering!

Next were Chicken and lam kebabs. Lightly spiced and cooked to a perfection, these were wonderful ..
The lamb kebabs were juicy and smoky .. Just the way you would want it to be ..

We were kinda getting full at this point. But main course was yet to come ..

For main course we had a chicken rice and saffron rice. Again the flavoring was spot on .. I loved the Saffron rice ..

For sides we had a chicken curry and veg curry.. The chicken gravy had the distinct flavor of dried lemons used in so many of Arabian and Persian dishes.. Nikita liked it a lot since it was a bit on the sour side ..

Now we were really bursting .. But no nice meal is complete without desserts ..

For desserts we had the following - could not remember the names though
- Dry fruits stuffed dumpling in a syrup
- A baked dish with dry fruits, coconut and milk

Just sat around for some more time to lighten up a bit  after all this heavy duty eating ..

Overall, absolute value for money .. The service was very pleasant and we were well taken care of ..
Would strongly recommend .. Do try this offer till it lasts. 21st June I guess is when this offer ends, but otherwise also this would be a nice place to return to for a beautiful a-la-carte dinner !

World Cup 2014 - Match 1 - Brazil vs Croatia !!

The much awaited WC 2014 kicked off today in Brazil!
First match between host Brazil and Croatia.

Slept for a couple of hours and got up to my alarm and was ready for the match after a splash of cold water..
The match was well worth it .. Intense and exciting with its twists and turns..

Surprise.. Surprise .. in the first 10 mins Brazil was down 0-1, thanks to an own goal from Marcello.. Nothing much he could have done but it was the only own goal ever by Brazil in a world cup final..

Brazil had all the possession - 70-30 by the end of the game and they pressed hard with Neymar finally delivering to the delight of the Brazilian fans to equalize at the 30 min mark.

Croatia did well to keep defending with the occasional counter attack. But deep into the second half when it looked like the match was heading for a well deserved draw, Brazil won a penalty. Did not look convincing in the replays and it changed the game. Neymar scored once again from the spot and the match was gone from Croatia.

A few minutes later Oscar who had been playing well throughout the match and deserved to score spotted a nice opportunity and netted the 3rd.

The match was now truly over and a few mins later the referee blew the whistle and the final scoreline read - BRAZIL3-CROATIA1.

But the match was more like a 1-1 for me for most of the time till the not-so-fair penalty changed the game.
All the home fans were ecstatic and I could retire to the second half of my sleep .. :-)

Continental/English breakfast - at home !!

Have been meaning to do this for a long time - prepare a proper continental/english breakfast at home..
Today seemed a perfect time being a Sunday.. All the ingredients however, had to be sourced yesterday in prep for this .. :-)

Took 20-25 mins to prepare .. but it was amazing and very filling - a proper lazy bfast !!

This is what we had :

- Vanilla and Cinnamon French toast
- Scrambled eggs
- Baked beans in Tomato sauce
- Chicken sausages
- Bacon
- Cold coffee

Here is a really short list of prep steps :

Toast - Break three eggs, add Sugar, salt, vanilla essence, a couple of tablespoons of milk and ground cinnamon powder. Whisk all above to a nice mixture. Dip bread pieces and lightly pan fry with a tiny bit of vegetable oil.

Eggs - A teaspoon of olive/vegetable oil. chopped onions, green chillies, salt, ground pepper. Fry a little, break two eggs and 'scramble'.

Baked beans - Pick a tin of sil baked beans and lightly sautee them with onion, green chillies and a little oregano.

Sausages and Bacon - Just get some good quality ones and thaw them and cut into small pieces and just stir fry them till they are crisp on the outside.

Cold coffee - No brainer. Cold milk, Sugar, Ice and Nescafe ! :-)

You can add some fresh fruits to the menu to give you that lightness to cut off all the proteins, carbs and fat from the above listed items .. Should add that next time ..

Benjarong Again - with Wifey!

Its six months since and one more round of Citibank Restaurant Week and one more chance to seize the opportunity to taste some high quality authentic food at some of the top restaurants in town.

Since the last time Nikita was not in town, and she loves Thai food, we opted for Benjarong - again!
Booked for a 7:30pm Sunday evening for a relaxed and extended dinner and it was truly enjoyable as always. The best part of such events is that being light eaters - the food is almost always more than filling, while we get to taste a whole lot of variety, which otherwise at such places is not possible for a similar price.

The meal costs 900+tax and generally amounts to ~2500/- for 2 with a couple of soft drinks.

Well we ordered as many different types from the choices that we had to be able to sample more dishes.

While we waited for the food to arrive, the usual platter with crunchy lettuce leaves with the host of condiments to make yourselves tiny rolls out of arrived and we had fun trying out different combinations of fillings ..

I had the Prawns Tom Kha soup while Nikita had the Mushroom Tom Yum soup. The Tom Kha has a smooth creamy texture because of the coconut milk in it with the delicate flavoring of basil and lemongrass and galangal. The prawns were amazingly soft and just melted in your mouth. This first dish livened things up and set the bar for expectations of the things to come.

For starters, we sampled :
- Corn fritters and
- The light and crunchy spring rolls

- Grilled fish on a stick and
- My favorite and specialty of this place - chicken in pandanus leaves.

There were also the raw mango(below) and three-mushroom(left) salads. With a fresh lemon, coriander and red chilli dressing, it was refreshing..

Now for the main course we had two types of noodles, egg fried rice and jasmine rice - thankfully in small helpings, but we still could not get through all of them ..
The main dishes were fish in hot chilli basil sauce, mushroom and chicken, chilli potatoes and the classic prawns Thai green curry. All of them were fantastic, especially the green curry. Wow!! it was amazing ..

Now after all the above, we were seriously stuffed, but there still was dessert. We asked for really tiny portions, but they were as tiny when they arrived.

We had a jackfruit delight - candied jackfruit, with vanilla ice cream and maybe some coconut milk(?) and the lemongrass ice-cream.

The later is very unique, as I have never had anything sweet with lemongrass, since in most places it is synonymous with savory dishes .

Tucked up in a nice little corner with all the wonderful food being very presented with utmost care, it was an evening well spent !!

Trip to the "Coffee Land" of Karnataka - Chikmagalur

"The first coffee tree was grown  in Chikmagalur and it was brought from West Asia by Baba Budan, in whose name there is a shrine on top of the hills in the region" - as stated in Wikipedia.

Chikmagalur is probably the only "hill station" in Karnataka and it houses the highest peak in Karnataka - Mullyangiri at ~6600 feet. The town is around 220 kms from bangalore, so a drive of 4-5 hours via Hassan  is all it takes since the roads are great - though toll roads most of the way.

I had been to this part of the world when we were younger and more adventurous several years ago. We  had trekked all the way from baba budangiri to Mullyangiri over several hills with breath-taking views and some really scary climbs. But details of that can wait for another post. This time around, it was with the regular family gang - Wifey, Pavan, Rashika and of course - Shrish! So, it was to be a more calmer family-wala trip but it ended up being great fun nontheless.

Had booked a place called - "coffee bean homestay" for Friday - 28th february. It was not the first choice, but then all the first and second choice places had been full, even though I had tried booking them 3 weeks in advance. Left Bangalore early at 7 am and headed towards Hassan. At ~8:30 everybody was starving including Chotu. So, we stopped at the first place that offered breakfast. Only after some dosas, idlis, Vadas with gallons of sambhar and chutney had been downed, peace was restored to our worlds.

The resort was ~20 kms from Chikmagalur and after some help from google maps, we reached the place at ~12:45pm. We were allocated two cottages - "rocks" and "pebbles".

These were away from the main building and well covered by trees on both sides and were very cosy and tastefully decorated. You could just sit on the porch for hours and stare in to the wooded estates. But that would be for later- lunch first!

Nishcit the young owner of the estate along with his wife welcomed us and showed us around the house while the puris were being fried. There was a 100 year old cactus which was now almost a tree. Some pet fishes which came up for bread and a large kennel of a variety of dogs and puppies. Also, a host of unique plants and trees - lichee, grapefruit, passion fruit, breadfruit (no kidding! there is apparently such a tree) ..

Lunch was Puris, chola, mix veg, pulav, "hollige", and of course some malnad-style tender chicken curry.
I loved the chicken curry and puris and made myself useful with lots of helpings of both.

Post lunch were sitting around and out came a beautiful pitch black pug-puppy - "lucky" which was only 40 days old..  Surprisingly no one in my group liked dogs too much, so they were happy to see it from far and not touch it.. But it was too cute to be not picked up and cuddled. The coat was shiny and very soft. Held on to it for sometime till it decided that it was time to go and explore the new world.

Some rest and in the evening we were driven to a sunset point a few kms away. The star attraction was the jeep ride (the good old original 4X4 - Mahindra jeep). It had an open top with handrails so you could standup and look around on the climbs. It was so much fun. Shrish also enjoyed it a lot. Once at the sunset point, we spent some quiet time sitting on the ledge and looking into the valley below. The silence was was lovely. You really learn to appreciate silence when you have lived in Bangalore for a long time.

The driver had packed coffee for us and milk and bournvita for Shrish. So we just sat there and enjoyed fresh and really strong coffee watching the sun go down. These are some of the small pleasures of life, which are getting so far and few in our busy lives. So, we enjoyed while we could.

Back at the cottage, we allowed Shrish to get a little sleep. His sleep-wake cycle was being disturbed, but he was as chirpy and active as ever. We adults settled down to a game of UNO and played a few rounds. I cheated a bit as usual, but it was simply not my day and I could not win a single game! :-)

Later, we dressed and headed to the main building where there was a camp fire and while we sat and chatted, Nishcit asked if we would like to taste some home brewed wine.We tried it out and it tasted very sweet and not bad. So, we had a couple of small glasses.. There were some nice hot starters to go with the fire and wine - baby corn fingers and some chilly chicken. Chotu wanted a green colored lays - for a 2 year old, he knows what he wants and insists on it.. Luckily the green wala is also my favorite - american cheese and onion and I had a pack lying in my bag which we could quickly fetch.

Sat around till the fire died down and it was time for dinner. Dinner was not very interesting. I had rice noodles and some more chicken curry and topped it off with some home made strawberry cheese cake(which were not impressive especially after having had cheesecakes in some of the best places in bangalore). The veg folks however had pumpkin - not a huge favorite apparently among vegetarians even!!

Got up early next day at 7 for a walk through the coffee estate. Niki decided to sleep in and logic was it was a Saturday and this trip was for relaxing and rejuvenating - could not argue with that !! Pavan, Rashika and even Shrish accompanied us. There were a few other folks also and all the dogs from the kennel - 3 pitbulls, 2 alsatians and 1 golden retriever and 1 daschund.

The property had a small lake and we rested for a few clicks and turned back. Long walk but pretty nice experience.

Back, bathed and dressed and post breakfast left for Chikmagalur. But on the way stopped at a very very beautiful and serene lake(Hirekolale). It was huge and we were the only folks around, so it was extremely silent and serene. Loved it.

Moved on to Chikmagalur town and checked in into the next hotel - which was more of a private house with a big backyard and a few cottages and rooms - Mountain valley! Rooms were tiny but cosy.

By this time, folks were starving, so with recommendation headed to the nearest best hotel - "Gowthami" and were pleasantly surprised with the service and food. Both were great!

Headed for the next destination - Baba Budangeri datta peetha. To say the drive was scenic and adventurous would be an understatement. Loved it. We had great view points - clear skies and mountains all around.
This is a place of worship for both muslims and hindus. It has a shrine for Baba Budan as well as an idol of lord Dattatreya and the pooja is done by a muslim priest. You walk down a flight of a couple of hundred steps and then you enter a small and dark caves inside which are placed the shrine and idol. Its dark and cool inside with very low ceilings. Next we pushed on to another place which is another 4 kms ahead and was a climb all the way to a viewpoint and falls called Manikyadhara falls. It was late afternoon by the time we reached there and there was a very nice breeze blowing - it was cool and almost chilly. Stopped for a few minutes at a fall that is right beside the road. Water was pretty damn cold.
Drove back and by the time we reached at the hotel it was already dark.

At the resort, there was camp fire and there was a big group of young boys and girls who were dancing and singing and having a pretty good time. But we were very tired and after having some starters sitting by the fire-side, we were eagerly waiting for dinner. Dinner here was pretty good. The owner's wife cooks the food herself and it was very good. Piping hot, since we were the first to get started. The parathas, chicken, dal, curry and of course the gulab jamuns were all really yummy.

Next morning, packed up and after vacating the resort, went to the famous and highly recommended - "Town Canteen" for breakfast and had some butter dosas. Boy, the dollops of butter were huge. The dosas were literally soaked once the butter melted! But, hey no one is complaining. At this point, we were planning to get out of CKM and maybe stop at Belur or something. But a local shopkeeper asked whether we had already seen Mullayangiri. He said, if you have come to CKM and not seen it, then its a blunder.. You must see it. OK, we thought - what the hell, lets do that also.

Again the drive to Mullayangiri was so beautiful in the nice clear morning, that you would like to stop at several places and just enjoy the view. You can drive almost upto the base of the peak and from there it is a climb of ~400-500 steps to the peak where there is a temple of lord Shiva. The wives stayed back at the base with the kid and Pavan and I decided to climb. Not being exactly fit - what I really mean is being so unfit without any physical exercise of any kind, we had to rest often before we actually made it to the top. But the mountain being barren, one could get a very nice uninterrupted view of miles of area around.

Back from Mullayangiri, we went for some local coffee and tea powder shopping - Panduranaga coffee works is the most famous among all and we bought some stuff there. Lunch at a place called "Arabian nights" and finally we headed out of town at ~3pm.
The broasted chicken and pulpy grape juice were the highlights!

Few kms away from Belur, on the way back, there is a place called Yagachi dam and its reservoir. Its huge and looks like a very large lake. A short 1 km detour from the highway took us to the water sports centre. Its a nice place and they have a lot of options - skiing, kayaking, boating, speed boating and a trampoline inside the water.

We chose the speed boat and Shrish was thrilled for the length of the 15 min ride. On the banks, they have a small hut with a few chairs. One can simply relax and enjoy the cool breeze in the shade while looking at the water.

Shrish's lunch was pending, so we decided to feed him before we moved on and I had a first hand experience of how difficult it is to feed a kid. To finish a small bowl of curd rice, it took 5-6 stories and maybe equal number of songs with equal amounts of threatening and pleading from all the four of us. Mission accomplished - we headed out and drove straight back to Bangalore.

Driving back is always the boring and most tiresome part of any trip. Once I am done with the trip, I would like to just flick a switch and just be home instantly to a waiting hot water bath and a nice warm bed. But in reality, we had to drive for another 4 long hours before we could reach Bangalore.

All in all, this was one trip that we enjoyed extremely. All the elements were great- stay, travel, site-seeing, activities and of course food - the entire lot!

Below are just a few more random pics from the outing !!

And of course our savior - a map of local sigh-seeing places and routes/distances etc. Almost everybody in the town has a photo-copy of it and trust me it is pretty useful!
